Another epic year of Anime North has come and gone, leaving behind a whirlwind of colorful memories, intricate cosplays, and unique finds that only this convention delivers. As one of Canada’s largest fan-run conventions, Anime North continues to be a haven for anime lovers, gamers, cosplayers, and pop culture enthusiasts. This year was no exception—despite a few weather-related hiccups, the spirit of the convention remained unshaken.
The first thing that always amazes me—and did again this year—is the sheer creativity and effort that goes into cosplay. You don’t just see people dressing up; you see wearable art. From detailed armor to handmade props, cosplayers showcased their dedication in the most astonishing ways. Some of them spent months preparing, using foam, 3D printing, LED lights, and a lot of imagination to bring their favorite characters to life. Watching fans express themselves through craftsmanship is one of the most inspiring parts of the event.
Unfortunately, the weather threw a curveball this year. Torrential rains in the daytime made it tricky getting the full event experience. One casualty of the storm for us was the outdoor rave, an annual highlight for many attendees. While a few still went, my team and I didn’t want to risk being caught in a downpour. It’s a bit of a shame, especially since last year’s rave was held indoors, providing shelter and a more consistent vibe. Hopefully, the organizers consider bringing it back inside for future events.
That said, Anime North isn’t just about flashy events—it’s also about discovery. This year, I had a particularly memorable experience at the Auction Hall. It’s a part of the convention that often flies under the radar, but it’s where hidden gems live. From rare figurines to fan-made art pieces, the auction features many one-of-a-kind items. I learned the hard way that hesitation can mean heartbreak. I had my eye on a beautifully crafted Totoro Lantern. I decided to walk around and “think about it” for a bit. When I returned just 10 minutes later, it was gone—claimed by someone else who recognized its charm. Lesson learned: if you love it and it’s in your budget, grab it.
Because of the unpredictable rain, our group mostly stuck to the vendor hall, which, truth be told, is my favorite part of the convention anyway. It’s more than just a place to buy stuff—it’s a cultural bazaar of passion projects, original art, imported merch, vintage finds, and handmade collectibles. You can talk to artists, pick up exclusive prints, and even discover lesser-known indie creators from across the country. There’s an energy in the vendor hall that’s contagious—everyone’s excited to show off what they’ve made or found.
Even with some things missed due to weather, Anime North 2025 was still a great experience. It reminded me about the community, passion, and shared joy. Whether you’re there to cosplay, shop, dance, or simply connect with people who love the same shows, there’s something for everyone. Here’s to next year—may it be sunny, dry, and just as full of magic.
